US Social Media Personality Penalized Following Mass E-Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge
NSW authorities have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported negligent driving after a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.
The Event: An Illegal Gathering
A group of approximately 40 individuals operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the downtown area and a nearby district.
"There was potential for people to be injured and killed," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.
Police said they did not chase right away the riders out of concerns for public safety but rather found the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.
Penalties Issued for Content Creator
Later in the week, authorities stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
The personality reportedly has more than 3.4 million followers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on the social media app.
Creator's Response
The content creator spoke with a major newspaper recently following the event gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "the biking community" a negative image.
"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was among the safest gatherings I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."
National Debate on E-Bike Regulation
The spate of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has prompted growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are truly severe," the minister said. "We’ve got to ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are given the authority to crack down, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."
The state recorded over two hundred injuries associated with electric bikes in 2024. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
