The Battle Royale's Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers has a special treat in store for Apex Legends players, perfectly timed for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick movement can rejoice to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when Season 27: Amped launches on November 4th.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." However it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and typically employed by pro gamers in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, Respawn is making it easier for everyone to execute these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and gamers might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can easily see when and how to trigger the fast-paced traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a once niche technique available to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for gamers to feel powerful — even those who are new.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we examined at our competition, observed what the community are doing, and we said, 'What if we provide some of this power to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Since right now, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — it requires to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a more official version?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Mobility is largely the central theme in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will boost players into the air faster than it used to. Her defensive walls feature overhead protection and the ability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. But it's the high-flying this Legend who's getting the most attention now, with multiple tweaks applied to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," says character developer the designer. "Certainly she was top-tier previously, but with the introduction of new Legends, mobility perks, and Evac Towers, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. It was a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, Holstead notes the team assessed each of her abilities and introduced some powerful changes. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing velocity during flight, and this equipment regenerates much quicker, allowing the player to spend more time in the air. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag opponents who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches teammates into the air for redeployment or retreat — now takes reduced delay to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Her jet pack fulfills that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, this location, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers says the game Season 27 is all about providing gamers the tools required to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," explains lead Legend designer the lead.

The battle royale the Amped season releases November 4th at the specified times.
