Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match winless beginning to the Premier League season.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the names to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town manager - who made over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work which means Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
