Hodgkinson recorded her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds the previous season in London.

Keely Hodgkinson finished her 800m season with a win at the women-only Athlos meet in New York on Friday evening.

{The reigning Olympic champion, who secured third place at the global championships recently, excelled in an outstanding victory in 1:56.53 in what was only her sixth race in a year affected by a hamstring injury.

Fellow Briton and global silver winner Georgia Bell took the runner-up spot again in 1:58.33, while St Vincent's Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) claimed third.

"I haven't competed much this year so it was probably less of a struggle for me to go out there and want to give it something," stated Hodgkinson.

"The atmosphere out there is incredible so it was extremely enjoyable."

The women-only meet filled the stadium in its second year, bringing a festive vibe to traditional track, with musical performances and Tiffany & Co. crowns substituting traditional winners' medals.

The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena W., who is wed to the founder of Athlos Alexis O., was on hand to present the winners with their crowns.

Previous champions took home sixty thousand dollars (£44,603) - one of the largest prize purses in track and field.

The event also attracted several top athletes, as the Kenyan three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Faith Kipyegon won the mile, finishing in 4:17.78.

American Brittany B., the 200m bronze medallist from the recent Paris Games, secured the 100m and 200m double.
