Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist announced he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel made public his repeated messages with the financier

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their progress".

Summers, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the AI firm said it accepted his determination to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on recently to pass a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its records on the case.

The bill will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to approve the measure, after reversing his view on the matter following pressure from his base.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-related messages made public by the Congressional committee recently mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to connect Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were released with the general audience, Summers said he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

Professional History

The economist held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from five years and continues to be a professor there. When stating his departure from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that he was ceased to be associated with the organization.

The former official became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
