A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who fled following the incident was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told reporters, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
