Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.

Computer-created images claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro detained after his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of impressions across the internet.

The Way AI Images of Maduro Appeared Rapidly

The first inauthentic synthetic picture apparently showing him taken off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. The picture was not shared any authoritative government accounts; rather, it was uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.

Further synthetic visuals were disseminated in the following hours, purporting to present more angles of the leader in custody. Discernible identifying marks on the graphics reveal they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.

SynthID confirms these additional pictures were likewise created or altered generative models.

Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Continued

The former US president posted the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite this confirmation was published, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were altered to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches reveal the new fake images were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Again, the AI-watermark detector found the new graphics were produced with generative artificial intelligence.

Main Takeaways:

  • AI-generated content spread rapidly following the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The initial fabricated picture was shared on the same day on social media.
  • Tools like AI-watermark detectors helped to confirm the pictures as inauthentic.
  • Fabrications persisted to spread and be updated even after the publication of authentic images.
  • The origin of many fakes was traced to specific online profiles dedicated to graphic design.
