Intense confrontations commenced when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Residents have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by various security forces comes after a extended probe.

Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Pará state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
