2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. But, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a host of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.

Should these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
